it’s just a car, but a bloody good one

I was threading my way through the narrow and ridiculously congested streets of a Cotswolds village called Charlbury when I spotted a wrinkly old man shuffling along the pavement. He was at least a hundred and thirty-seventeen years old and bent almost double by the driving rain, the cold and the arthritis in his brittle bones.
But when he saw that I was driving an E-type Jaguar, he stood up straight, shoulders back and arms outstretched as though greeting the arrival of God himself. And he beamed. You’ve never seen a smile so huge. It made my day because it demonstrated that while they may be shrinking in number, there are still some people out there who can be made happy by seeing a car. Oh, and because I’d brightened the day of a very old man. Which is as satisfying as spoiling the day of a socialist. Which is something else I was doing, come to think of it.

The thing is, I wasn’t driving an E-type Jaguar. It had started out that way, but then an American man commissioned a small British engineering firm called Eagle to make it as light as was humanly possible. So they replaced all the 1960s ironmongery with stuff from the exotic end of the periodic table to create what’s called the Lightweight GTR. The body is aluminium, the wheels are magnesium, the wheel lugs and the conrods and the gearlever are titanium, the battery is lithium, the brakes are carbon-ceramic, the plenum chamber is carbon fibre and the badge at the front of the bonnet is now a sticker. And the end result of all this Ozempic engineering is a car that weighs 975kg. The Hindenburg weighed more than that and it was full of hydrogen.

The engine has been changed too. After some boring and stroking, it is now a 4.7-litre straight-six, which is fed by triple Weber 45 carburettors and produces about 420 brake horsepowers. Which is a huge amount in a car that weighs less than my lawnmower.

So when you’re done making very old men very happy, you can find a nice bit of road and make yourself happy too. It’s a lovely car to drive. It’s modern and tight but somehow still old-skool. The noise it makes, for instance, is deliciously farty and in one particularly heavy downpour my right leg did get a bit wet. You’d moan if it happened in your Nissan Note but in the GTR? Nah. It would be like staying in an olde-worlde hotel and moaning about banging your head on the beams.

What might make your eyes go a bit crossed is the price. It’s £1.3 million. But actually that’s right in the ballpark for cars that have been reimagined and rebuilt using the latest materials and technology. A company down the road from me called Theon is making exquisite- looking Porsche 911s and they too can go for seven figures.

Then you have Alfaholics from Somerset, which charges about £300,000 for one of its exquisite GTAs, and there’s an Italian outfit called Kimera that wants a similar amount for turning a Lancia Montecarlo into an extremely beautiful tribute to the 037.

If you have your eye on a classic, chances are there’s a company out there who will, for an enormous amount of money, restore and modify it. It’s called “restomodding” and I must say it does appeal. An electric 1956 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud. A pagoda-roofed Mercedes SL with an AMG V8 under the bonnet. A friend of mine has a series one Range Rover that is moved along by an Aston Martin V12. It’s very fun.

I know the purists scoff at this sort of thing but it doesn’t stop me dreaming. And what I dream about most of all is the sister car to the Eagle GTR. It’s the Speedster and it’s the best-looking “thing” ever made by man. The Trevi Fountain. That Zaha Hadid art gallery in Baku. The Riva Aquarama. They all pale into insignificance alongside it. I still yearn to own one, even though it costs about £1 million. This sounds like silly money, and it is if you see it as a car. But not if you see it, as I do, as art. Because just last year a painting by Gustav Klimt — me neither — sold for £179 million.

And now, having ensured that the comments section of the online edition is full of tax-the-rich sentiments, let’s see if I can calm our lefty friends with a nice, sensible review of the Volkswagen Polo. Specifically, a new version to commemorate its 50th birthday. That makes it the same age as Microsoft, David Beckham and Jaws.

So you’d imagine that as it’s such a big milestone, VW would break out the party hats and festoon it with amusing nods to the past. A fake wood dashboard, say, like in the very first Polo. Or maybe it would paint every panel a different colour as with the Harlequin Polo 30 years ago.

Well, it hasn’t. All you get are little 50 badges, a sunroof and some biggish wheels. Not very much, really, for £26,850.

I was ready to dismiss it as a cynical marketing tool. And it is. Then I took it for a drive and it was like coming home. Nothing was annoying. Nothing was where you wouldn’t expect to find it. A lot of new cars are designed like other people’s kitchens. They have teaspoons in a drawer that’s nowhere near the coffee machine and sugar under the sink. Well, the Polo’s not like that. It’s like your house. Familiar. Comforting. And it was a doddle to turn off all the warning bongers.

There’s more. It was extremely light to drive, mainly because it isn’t burdened with any unnecessary batteries, it was very comfortable and there was a surprising amount of space in both the boot and the cabin. Also, the Polo does well in safety tests. Which is why my youngest daughter has one.

The three-cylinder, 1.0-litre engine was a joy. Guttural, economical and surprisingly powerful. I now think manual gearboxes are as irritating as having a television with no remote, but somehow, in the 50, it felt right that my left leg had something to do. It was like being back in 1984. I even considered playing some Kenny Loggins as I whizzed along.

I’m not sure I’d spend the extra cash on the 50 edition, but if you want a really good small car, take a long hard look at the normal and less expensive versions. And hurry — VW is busy working on the new Polo, which will have all sorts of absurd Miliband nonsense in it.

To sum up, then, the Polo is not art and it’s not an electrical appliance either. It’s a car. And a bloody good one.
