In the past four years the number of people in Britain who believe that the warnings about global warming are exaggerated has increased by a whopping 50 per cent. Astonishingly, the trend is particularly noticeable among teenagers. It was reported last year that a third now say climate change is probably nonsense.

This causes me to wonder what’s going on at Jaguar. It stopped making cars with internal combustion way ahead of time and announced that an electrical replacement was on the drawing board. Is it regretting that now? I think it probably should be.

And if that’s all you want from your personal transportational device, you’re going to buy something made in China. Because it will be cheaper than something made in Munich or Coventry.

And that brings me neatly to a Chinese car that is disguised as a not-Chinese car. The company is owned by the Chinese giant Geely, but you wouldn’t know it because the car comes with a badge that’s as Swedish as Abba, dynamite, Spotify and those annoying cartons that spurt milk on to your trousers every time you try to open them. Yup. What it says on the back is “Volvo”.

It’s the XC60 and I wasn’t looking forward to driving it as I pretty much loathe all the cars in this sector of the market. The Audi Q5 is a pair of slacks with some windscreen wipers, the BMW X3 is ugly and the Mercedes-Benz GLC is driven by the sort of people who stick to the 20mph limit. Because as often as not they campaigned for one in their village. Again, we have to bring up Lucy Jordan, who never dreamt of driving through Paris in a mid-sized crossover.

To make things even worse, the Volvo sent to my house was painted in what it calls Mulberry Red, which sounds quite pleasant but it was actually a sort of American motel room burgundy. So, a boring car in a bad colour. And at this point I have to say keep reading because, whoa, this is a very good car.

First things first. It’s a really nice place to sit. Today, car interiors are all broadly the same. It’s like someone figured out where everything should go and what everything should be made from and now everyone just makes sheep noises and follows suit. Not Volvo. The materials are different. The look is different. Everything is different. The key fob is orange, the starter button is a knob and the gearlever is made from Orrefors crystal. A crystal gearknob! How cool is that?

It’s not just stylish either. It’s as easy to use as a tea towel. When other carmakers fit a button it does different things depending on how often you push it or how long you hold it down for. Not Volvo. Each button does one thing and one thing only. You want to turn off the speed-limit warning bong? You push a button. And it’s a big button, so you can operate it wearing gloves. And no, you can’t change the layout of the dashboard. And you can’t alter the drive mode either.

I should mention the seats at this point. They are very attractive and extremely sporty, so they look like they might be a bit uncomfortable. They aren’t. Nothing is in this car. It doesn’t ride over bumps, it glides. And for 2025 more sound insulation is added, so it’s quiet too.
座椅也应该重点讲一下。新XC60的座椅非常有吸引力,运动感也很强,所以初看之下,你以为坐在车里会不舒服。但事实并非如此,新XC60能过滤一切颠簸,它不是骑过障碍,而是直接滑过去。在新款车型上,沃尔沃还增强了隔音效果,所以车厢内部无比静谧。

The engine? Well, you can have a hybrid if you want your car to be extra-heavy, but as I’m in tune with the times and see no need for this net-zero nonsense, I went for the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine. It’s not quite big enough for a car of this size, and not very refined either, so it sounds as if it’s working its nuts off half the time. Perhaps that’s why it’s quite thirsty.

But if you’re just bumbling along — and let’s be honest, in a mid-size Volvo that’s what you will be doing — it’s fine. Actually, you’ve no choice but to bumble along because all Volvos today, even the 448-brake-horsepower XC90 T8, are limited to 112mph.

Let’s talk now about the all-wheel drive system. You’re never going to need it, really. This is not a car for conquering the Kalahari. But there’s no harm in having it, and I suppose it might come in handy if you go to a gymkhana and it’s raining and you have to park in a field.

What you do need in a car of this type is all the school-run stuff, and don’t worry on that front. Twenty-three years ago Volvo became the first carmaker in the world to employ a man with actual children to design the seven-seat XC90, and plainly he’s still there because the XC60 is riddled with switches and levers that don’t break your nails and seats that don’t weigh more than the moon. You can therefore raise and lower the back seats with one arm while holding a baby.

This is an impressive car. It’s priced to match its German rivals but it’s better. It’s unassuming, comfortable, sensible and, inside at least, beautifully appointed. And in less than five years you won’t be able to buy it any more.
