The reason I rarely review electrical cars is that I’m really not qualified to make a judgment. I have absolutely no idea what a kilowatt is or what it does, I’m not excited by range or charging times or lithium and I can’t get my head round the tax implications of getting your power from a volt. And I’m not going to bother finding out because it was a passion for cars that got me into motoring journalism, not accountancy.

近年来我很少评测电车,因为我知道以自己的浅薄认知很难对电车做出评价。我完全不理解“千瓦时”这个词,也不知道它能做什么;续航里程、充电时长或是锂电池本身都很难让我兴奋;至于每度电对税收的影响更是难以理解,我也懒得花时间去研究。我做汽车记者的初衷就是来源于自己对汽车的热爱,而不是像会计一样对着数字发呆。

The other problem is that I’m not psychologically able to handle life with an electrical car. I don’t have the mental capacity to spend even ten minutes in a Little Chef while it fills itself with its invisible go-juice. I’m not a patient man. I called out Sky this morning because the box that lives behind my TV sometimes takes four seconds to come on and I don’t have time for that. And if I ever get in a lift that doesn’t have a button you can press to close the doors, I have what feels very like a coronary. I have a mantra: “Now. Or I can’t be bothered.”

Plus, I’m not completely sold on the environmental reasoning behind the electrical car. Will a battery-powered Renault 5 save civilisation from itself? I’m really not convinced it will.

再者,推行电车、拯救环境的那些大道理我也不完全认同。搞一台电动雷诺5就能让人类文明免于自毁吗?鬼才信呢。

I also have no idea how such cars work. Some, I’m led to believe, have two electric motors, one for the back wheels and one for those up front. And I cannot comprehend how this is possible. Because if these motors aren’t spinning at exactly the same rate, surely the car will elongate like it’s in a cartoon. Or scrunch up, like a concertina.

我也不知道电车是怎么工作的。据我了解的信息,它们一般有两个电机,一个在前轴,一个在后轴。我无法理解这两个电机的工作模式,如果它们的转速不一致,车子要么像动画片里的特效一样被拉长,要么就像手风琴一样被卷成一团。

I therefore don’t trust myself to review something I don’t understand or like. It would be like sending a Texas beef farmer to review a vegan café in Brighton. You are not going to get much balance or insight.

So I’d like to apologise this morning to those of you who dance to Chris Packham’s tune because I’ve been charged with the task of reviewing an electrical BMW called the iX xDrive60. I’ll do my best, but if you want a fair assessment, you’re probably better off reading a report in Electric Car Monthly.

We must begin with the styling and I’ll admit that some of the new electric cars do look quite snazzy. There are a couple of Polestars that please the eye and I’m rather fond of that Hyundai thingy. But this Beemer is a complete minger.

That makes it a first because BMW has never really made an ugly car before. It went through a weird patch when Chris Bangle was head of design, but even his more out-there creations were never hideous. The lumpen iX xDrive60, though, just is. It’s BMW’s Ford Scorpio moment.

这也让iX成为了宝马推出的第一台难看的车,它的丑在宝马的历史上是前所未见的。即便宝马在20年前由Chris Bangle(1992-2009年宝马设计总监,主导E世代宝马车型)主导设计时,整体的设计风格有些标新立异,但也没到不堪入目的程度。但是,笨重的iX xDrive60已经丑得没法看了,对于宝马而言,iX的存在就跟福特的天蝎座一样,外观上实在是一言难尽。

I can never understand how this happens because, surely, the designer has to present his ideas to the board and it’s hard to understand how they can all just sit there and nod when the proposal is so obviously woeful. I mean, look at that enormous grille. It makes the car look like the result of a liaison between Esther Rantzen and Luis Suárez. And it’s illuminated, so you can even see it at night.

我无法理解为什么宝马会这么做。设计师肯定要把最终的设计定稿提交给董事会确认,但那帮成天窝在会议室里的老登是怎么想的,这么难看的外观都能过审?看看那个巨大的前格栅,让整台车看起来就像苏亚雷斯(乌拉圭足球运动员)和Esther Rantzen(英国女演员)的结合体。而且,晚上它还会发光,所以你能在晚上看到iX明晃晃的发光“大板牙”。

Next up, the price. Now I know that all non-Chinese cars have suddenly become very expensive, and I know that electric cars are more expensive than most, for reasons that aren’t clear: they don’t have engines, so you’d imagine they’d be cheaper. But anyway, the iX xDrive60 is £92,200, which seems steep. And the car I tested, with a few extras fitted, was a fiver short of £111,000.

再说说iX的价格。我知道现在英国市场里所有非中国进口的新车一下子变得很贵,而且电车比普通油车更贵,这就很奇怪了,考虑到它们没有引擎,理应更便宜才是。无论如何,这台新iX xDrive60的起售价是92,200英镑(约合人民币85万),贵得有些离谱了。至于我的这台测试车,加装了一些选配之后,总价接近111,000英镑(约合人民币103万)。

It doesn’t look like a £111,000 car from the outside and it certainly doesn’t when you open the pillarless door and climb aboard. There’s a lot of plastic and the door bins are unlined so anything you put in there rattles. That’s always a clue that skimping has been going on. That said, the design is actually rather attractive. The dash is extremely low, so it sits in front of you almost like a church kneeler. This means the glovebox can only be used for storing an After Eight mint, but on the upside you don’t feel as though you’re “in” the car so much as in front of it. You feel as if you’re at the wheel of a National Express coach.

但,光从外表来看,iX就不太像一台百万豪车,当你打开无框车门钻进车厢内时,廉价感会更加强烈。内饰有很多塑料件,扶手箱也没做任何内衬,任何放在里面的东西都会发出异响,你能清楚地感觉到宝马在想方设法地控制成本。不过,内饰的设计风格还是很不错的,整个仪表台位置极低,就跟教堂跪凳一样摆在你面前,这也意味着手套箱小得只能塞下一盒薄荷巧克力。从好的角度来看,坐在车里的感觉不会很压抑,整车视野极其通透,就跟坐在大巴车的最前排一样。

Naturally there are two glass screens and about thirty apps you can access, either by touching the screen or using a proper sort of mouse wheel in the centre console. I’m sure that many things are possible but whatever I pressed seemed to make everything purple and then the seat started to massage me. I hate being massaged. I’d rather be licked by Jacob Rees-Mogg. So I found that feature annoying, especially as it took me ages to work out what I’d pressed to make it begin.

作为一台电车,iX拥有2块屏幕和30个左右的车载应用,可通过触摸屏或中控台上类似鼠标一样的iDrive触摸旋钮操作。我知道它能做很多事情,但是不管我怎么操作,似乎都会让车内的氛围灯变成紫色,随后座椅开始对我按摩,我宁愿被Jacob Rees-Mogg(前英国商业、能源和产业战略大臣)舔也不愿意被按摩,最终我花了很长时间才找到座椅按摩的开关,这个功能太烦人了。

Now we must get on to the business of what this car feels like to drive. And at the risk of sounding like a traitor to the petrolhead cause, I must say it was rather nice. I can’t explain what was going on under the skin because I can’t be bothered to wade though the technical specifications, but ooh, it’s speedy. BMW says it goes from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds, but it felt way faster than that.

As is the way with electric cars, however, the power comes instantly and then fizzles out, which is probably why the top speed is a fairly pedestrian 124mph. I didn’t go that quickly but I did go to London and back and must say it was extremely comfortable. It gets a solid ten out of ten on that front, and it was quiet too. I know everyone says all electric cars are quiet, but that’s not really true as 80 per cent of the sound made by a car comes from its tyres. Somehow in the BMW, though, their din is suppressed.

跟其他的电车一样,iX的动力是瞬时响应的,带着电机运转的嘶嘶声,这或许解释了为什么它的极速只有可怜的200km/h。我倒也没开到那么快,但我最近开着它来回伦敦,不得不说iX坐起来非常舒服,前排的舒适度我给满分,静谧性也很好。我知道所有人都说电车开起来很安静,但事实并非如此,一台车80%的声音都来自于胎噪。神奇的是,宝马不知道用了什么魔法,把胎噪抑制得死死的。

After I returned from London I did a few trips on the Oxfordshire lanes and found that, despite the 2.5-tonne weight problem, it was an easy car to hustle. And also able to deal well with the potholes. It may not be the ultimate driving machine, but it’s a very good driving machine.

在我从伦敦回来后,带着iX跑到牛津郡的乡道上开了几趟,尽管它的体重高达2.5吨,想把它开快还是很轻松的,而且它能应对路上的各种坑洞。虽说iX不一定是终极驾驶机器,但它的操控非常给力。

Eventually the range-o-meter said the batteries should be recharged, so I parked close to a socket in the garage, opened the boot and found the sort of cable I imagine they use to keep space rockets connected to the tower. On each end were plugs that wouldn’t fit into anything I have on the farm. Presumably this meant I’d have to go into town and sit in the Co-op car park for half an hour. I’m far too busy for that sort of nonsense, so it was eventually taken back to BMW on the back of a lorry.

最终,仪表盘上的续航里程表提示我续航里程不足,需要充电。于是我把车停到车库的插座边上,打开后备箱,找到一根看起来像火箭--发射塔连接线一样的充电线,无论哪头都插不进农场的任何插座。或许我应该把车开到镇里,找一个有充电桩的停车场充半小时。但我真的很忙,顾不上这种麻烦事,最终宝马的人过来把车子拽到拖车上带走了。

To sum up. If you’ve £111,000 lying around and you want an ugly car that’s inconvenient to use, this extremely comfortable Beemer really isn’t bad at all.

总结一下,如果你有111,000英镑(约合人民币103万)的闲钱,想要一台用起来很不方便、外观又很丑的车,这台极其舒适的宝马iX还是挺不错的。
