Aston Martin has a bit of a problem. It’s this: almost all the cars it has made for the past 30 years have looked quite similar. I’m not saying that picking the best is like choosing your favourite milk bottle. But it is like going into the maternity ward at your local hospital and choosing a favourite baby. I know new mothers will disagree with this quite strongly, but to me all babies really do look the same. Seriously, I’m surprised, given how hopeless the NHS can be at paperwork, that mix-ups don’t happen more often. Perhaps they do.

I wonder if they happen at Aston Martin service centres as well. You drop off your DB11 for a bit of routine maintenance and in the evening you accidentally go home in an old DBS. My bet is that you probably wouldn’t notice until you looked in the glovebox and found that the boiled sweets in there were blackcurrant flavour.

It’s easy to see what’s happened, because back in 1994 the great designer Ian Callum came up with a whole new type of Aston, the DB7. And it was pretty much perfect. Long bonnet. Muscly haunches. Low. And just the right blend of prettiness and aggression. So when Aston launched the DB9 a decade later it was more of the same. And so was the DB11 and so was the DB12 and so was the DBS and so was the Vanquish and so was the Vantage. Aston Martin had become the automotive equivalent of Hawkwind. They opened the show with Silver Machine, and the last time I saw them they played it as an encore as well.

Ferrari had options. It could put the engine in the middle or at the front. It could, and did, make four-seaters. It could change its styling, but on its mainstream road cars Aston couldn’t. Because it had worked out what these cars should look like and that was that.

This is good news for you and me, though, because — and I mean this — you could spend £15,000 on an old DB7, and if you polished the paintwork to make it gleam, and you burnished its alloys to make them look like new, almost everyone would assume you were driving a £185,000 DB12.

So what about the new Vanquish, the car you see in the pictures this morning? Ah well, with this one they had an extra problem, because the recent DBS Ultimate comes with 759 brake horsepower. So if the Vanquish is to justify its truly colossal price tag of £361,000, it has to look different somehow and offer even more grunt.

Incredibly it does look different. It’s the first Aston I’ve seen in decades that you wouldn’t muddle up with all the others. Partly this is down to the fact that it’s long. Really long. So long that it wouldn’t fit in any of the bays outside my local pub. And it has a completely new sort of back end. But my God it works. In profile especially, this is a sensational-looking car. So sensational that my land agent, Charlie Ireland — a man who is so uninterested in cars he doesn’t even know what he drives — paused momentarily in my yard to pass comment. “That is very pretty,” he said.

So it has pulled off the looks but what about the engine? I honestly thought that the V12 as a species was a goner, that there’d be no way to squeak such a thing past the legislation of today. But Aston’s done it. And it’s not like this is the old V12 with some mapping changes. It has gone to the trouble — even though it knows it is developing the equivalent of a coal-fired power station — of fitting a new block, new heads, new ports, new camshafts, new connecting rods, new turbochargers and new fuel injectors. It has even relocated the spark plugs. And the result is 824 completely hybridless brake horsepowers and 738 torques. This is one hell of an engine. Ferrybridge with an Aston badge.

Naturally the Vanquish is consequently very fast. I’m told the convertible is the fastest front-engined drophead in the world. Which is a bit like saying you’re the loudest town crier. There’s not much competition these days. But the funny thing is that it doesn’t feel scary. If I’m honest, half the time it doesn’t even feel fast. But then you look down at the speedometer and, holy cow, really? This is one of those cars that is usually doing 50mph more than you would ordinarily deem to be sensible.

You need to be very careful on a motorway, that’s for sure, because it really does make 120mph feel like 70mph. I have to put this down to some clever electronic trickery and how all this laptoppery is handled by the Bilstein DTX dampers. Aston itself says it has been set up to “breathe the road”, and it has hit the nail on the head with that, because it does.

This is one of those long-legged cars, a Kenyan marathon star, a mile muncher. And as the suspension works with the road, it is sublimely comfortable. Of course, if you want you can make it uncomfortable by engaging some kind of sport mode, but I can’t see the point. It would be like wearing your new suit inside out. Yes, you could probably go round a corner 1mph faster, but that’s not the point, surely, in a car this big. If you want lap records, buy a Porsche.

Inside it all looks beautiful but it’s not that easy to use. As is the case in the DB12, it’s too easy to turn on the lava-hot seat heaters when you operate the touchscreen, though at least the Vanquish comes with a “torpedo inbound” klaxon to let you know you’ve done it.

新Vanquish的内饰看起来很精致,但用起来不太方便。跟DB12一样,当你操作新Vanquish的中控触摸屏时,经常会误触座椅加热按钮,让我的屁股感受到熔岩一般的火热。不过新Vanquish做了升级,搞了个“鱼雷装填完毕”的哔哔声提醒我座椅加热又打开了。

Also it’s very hard to read the font on the buttons if you use human eyes, especially if it’s sunny and the roof is down. And how to describe cruising around the Cotswolds at what felt like 60mph (but probably wasn’t) in an Aston Martin, with autumn starting to paint all the leaves orange and with droplets of dew in the cobweb that always forms overnight between the door mirror and the door? Wonderful is the right word.

This is not a Ferrari. It’s not a Bentley. And it definitely isn’t a Porsche. It feels different to all of them. I’d like to say it really is the perfect car for James Bond. He can drive all the way to the south of France and not be so stiff that he can’t have a fight when he gets there. And yet it’s fast enough to be able to pull away from whatever is chasing him over an Alp later in the day.

新Vanquish给人的感觉不像法拉利,也不是宾利,与保时捷更是相差甚远,它带给你的感受与众不同。我想说新Vanquish绝对是詹姆士·邦德的不二之选,他能开着新Vanquish一路咆哮到法国南部,也不会因为糟糕的乘坐体验让身体过于僵硬,无法与敌人战斗;而且在后续的阿尔卑斯山脉上,新Vanquish有充足的速度让他拉开与所有追兵的距离。

The only real problem is that James Bond is dead. Aston isn’t, though, and if it continues to mine the seam between outright sportiness and puddingy comfort this well, it won’t be any time soon.

唯一的问题是,丹尼尔·克雷格饰演的詹姆士·邦德已经死了,但阿斯顿马丁还活着。如果他们能继续坚持在邦邦硬的运动感和软乎乎的舒适感中找到那份绝佳的平衡,我相信马丁还能一直坚持下去。
